FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 12, 2011 ENERGY CAREER EXPO COMING TO AREA Area residents interested in a career in the energy industry will soon have a chance to explore job opportunities in this exciting field. The “Get into Energy” Utilities, Gas & Oil Career Expo will be taking place on Tuesday, October 18 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Muskingum County Event & Welcome Center at 205 N. Fifth Street in downtown Zanesville. The “Get into Energy” Career Expo is a program created by the Center for Energy Workforce Development and Ohio’s Energy Workforce Consortium. Regional energy companies and local economic development leaders are partnering to present the career expo that will provide the resources necessary to prepare and educate the young workforce, both men and women, on a number of energy-related jobs and careers that they can enter. The expo will feature an abundance of information, training literature, interactive presentations, networking opportunities, and equipment demonstrations. One highlight will also include an American Electric Power simulation that covers safety precautions on live lines, a hands-on protective equipment trial, and a demonstration of how power is introduced into a house. AEP-Ohio is a presenter who will have Human Resource representation available to discuss the application process. Mid-East Career & Technology Center and Zane State College will also have exhibitions showcasing their power line, solar, welding, natural gas, and electrical training programs. Guernsey County Department of Job and Family Services Director Kathy Jamiel says that she hopes this expo will create enthusiasm for potential career pathways in energy related jobs. “The Guernsey County Department of Job and Family Services, through our Opportunity Center, is working with a partnership concept, between AEP and area workforce consortium in adjoining counties, to focus on a succession plan for the future of utilities in our area,” says Jamiel. “We want to create an opportunity to meet the needs of companies in our area today and in the near future, continued Jamiel. One of the biggest challenges we have is to determine what the future needs of the community will be.” To assist in this process, there exists a Workforce Policy Board comprised of Jamiel, Steve Allen, Steve Douglass, Tom Laughman, Tom Orr, Pam McCauley, Jo Sexton, Jeff Hanson, Jack Harris, Jack McCollum, Bill Whipple, Larissa Harper, Jim Vaughn, William Bussey, and Norm Blanchard. “They are positioned to ‘advise’ us with the direction of our workforce division, says Jamiel. They bring much wisdom to the table, and we rely on their expertise to strategically plan for the needs of our county.” The career expo is free and open to the public.
